Bladder campion is a common wild herb that grows around all of Europe in meadows and fields. Its name comes from the peculiar shape of the flower, which looks like a little empty bag. Rather than for the flower, the plant is very popular as a foraging herb, as the young shoots are used as vegetables in many traditional recipes, thanks to their unique, sweet, green-peas–like taste. In Italy, picking the young leaves to make omelettes and risotto is a spring tradition.
The package contains 250 seeds. Indoor sowing: February – March, outdoor sowing: March -April, September – October. Partial shade is perfect for growing. Low watering needs. Bladder campion appears in spring as a basal rosette of succulent, velvety blue-green leaves. To best appreciate the tender, succulent leaves and shoots, harvest them at this stage. The plant is said to be emollient and is used in baths or as a fumigant. If risotto is your favourite Italian dish, try it with bladder campion, softly mixes with butter, black pepper and a bit of grated parmesan, or combine it with eggs in a delicious frittata.
